A registered design protects the appearance of an article, such as its shape or the pattern or ornament applied to it. To be capable of registration the design must possess some degree of novelty. When applying to register a design, it is necessary to submit representations of it in the form of photographs or drawings. Some designs are also protected by unregistered design right which is similar to copyright.
